Hours Calculator formula
Worked hours = (end time − start time) − break time. If end time is earlier than start time (overnight shift), 24 hours are added before subtracting. Decimal hours = total minutes ÷ 60; pay = decimal hours × hourly rate.

- How do I calculate work hours with breaks?
- Subtract your start time from your end time to get elapsed time, then subtract any unpaid break. This calculator does both in one step — just enter the break minutes and the result is your paid hours.
- How are overnight shifts calculated?
- If your end time is earlier than your start time (e.g. 22:00 → 06:00), the calculator adds 24 hours to the end time before subtracting, so the elapsed time comes out correctly as 8 hours.
- What are decimal hours?
- Decimal hours convert the minutes portion of a duration into a fraction of an hour. 8 hours 15 minutes = 8.25 decimal hours. Payroll systems use decimal hours because they multiply cleanly by an hourly rate.
- How do I convert hours and minutes to decimal?
- Divide the minutes by 60 and add to the hours. For 7 hours 45 minutes: 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75, so 7.75 decimal hours. The calculator shows both formats side by side.
- Does this calculator track overtime?
- It calculates total daily hours; overtime depends on your local labor law (typically hours over 40 in a U.S. workweek or over 8 in a California day). Multiply any hours above that threshold by 1.5 (or 2.0) times your regular rate.
